Our History

For more than 100 years, Calvert has been a preeminent leader in education. Our global impact and reputation continue to grow.

Virgil Hillyer's Legacy: 100 Years and Counting

In 1896, four Baltimore families organized a school for their children. In 1897, they opened the first Calvert School.  Virgil Hillyer was recruited to be the first headmaster. He was a visionary Harvard graduate who had a passion for making high-quality education available to children who wouldn't be able to attend in person. With its ”game spirit" and high quality, the curriculum soared in popularity. It was a worldwide phenomenon by the 1930s.  Hillyer would go on to gain a national and international reputation as an innovator in primary and elementary education, an author of children's books, and the founder of Calvert's Home Instruction department in 1906. The legacy of this brilliant educator, updated to today's standards, is available to capable students around the world.

The Modern Intersection: Heritage Meets Innovation

The lessons behind Calvert once had to be delivered by boat, camel or dogsled. Much of that material can now be sent as bits and bytes. The technology revolution has streamlined interaction with instructors and academic coaches. Educational support and enrichment are available with speed and accessibility that surpasses any generation before.
